While working on the website today, I have had some thoughts about what it may mean “to retreat”. In the spiritual sense, that is, back tracking from the spiritual battle out there which is not going your way… Here are my thoughts today on the 23rd Psalm – full of rest, comfort, provision, green fields and still waters… and, if following his direction to restoration, renewal and purpose:
The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.
Father God is our provider and gives us all that we need. Sometimes, he gives us all we want, but sometimes we want things which are not good for us.
He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.
He directs us to places of rest, green meadows, peaceful streams. Peace and times of restoration. Immersed in nature, leafy trees, fresh breezes, birds and insects.
He renews my strength.
We need good sleep and rest to become strong again. Or stronger than we were before. Able to see clearly again and make sensible decisions.
He guides me along right paths, bringing honour to his name.
God’s plan for our lives is right – in several ways. It is always proper, appropriate and correct. It is honourable and following it will bring respect to God.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.
Sometimes, life may feel difficult – the dark night of the soul, bereavement, health issues, financial worries, despair over choices made by family members, hassles at work but He has promised we are not alone. Our Shepherd is close beside to protect us and encourage us to keep on going.
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies.
He has seen our struggles, brings us out on to the other side. A celebratory meal is put together for us… I’d always thought that the presence of our foes meant they would be on the outside looking in at the banquet but have recently come to the conclusion that it may also mean that they are at the table too, because they are no longer enemies.
You honour me by anointing my head with oil.
The ancient middle eastern practice of pouring and massaging heads with oil as a mark of respect. An opportunity to set apart for God’s special purpose and show His blessing.
My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
Plenty… a cornucopia of good things which bring healing, health and a sense of purpose in life. I pray you find rest in retreat at Nesthaven with more blessings than you can count!
